Chapter Eleven

Days passed within the city.

He and Serena stayed together, every so often accompanied by Griffin, though he worked with Boris and spent time in the city. Rob wondered what he did, although he suspected Griffin was exploring much like he and Serena intended to do.

They hadn’t seen signs of the vine-wielding attackers.

Then again, he and Serena hadn’t wandered the city, either. Neither of them wanted to get into any sort of fight with the locals. It was safer to stay inside. They still didn’t know why Boris brought them to Everton, and they mutually agreed they would wait and see what Boris might ask of them before they explored more of the city. It was better than getting into another argument with locals. Better than Rob revealing his essence and having the locals fear he brought the Spread into their city. Serena hadn’t minded, but Rob had. He didn’t want to be responsible for that, though it wasn’t like he lost control over his essence and caused ice to spread from him. It required conscious thought on his part to use his essence like that.

Still, he wanted to progress. He didn’t want to be in danger if he faced more Everton locals—or any of the strange arctic creatures they encountered.

Rob consumed more of the essence in his flask, and each time he did, the cold burned in his tongue and mouth. As he swallowed it, he felt the way it washed down to his belly, leaving a trail of cold working through him. He feared what it meant for him, but not so much that he stopped doing it. He tried to process the essence, but it was difficult. The more essence he consumed, the more he thought he would fortify his own. Only he hadn’t seen any significant change. He didn’t feel any different inside, and he continued constricting his own essence, but even as he did, he didn’t feel like it was becoming any more potent. Serena believed he was close to dragon touched, but not as close as he wanted.

Serena hunched over her notebook, looking over the patterns they’d seen in the dragon killer cave, and she frowned, regarding him with a strange expression. She’d told him she’d been trying to understand the dragon killer for a while, but finally had an opportunity to sit and study. She didn’t mind that they were isolated in the Borderlands, though Rob wondered if she minded more than she let on.

A knock came on his door, and Rob got up, pausing in front of the door, and wished he could feel essence just as well as he could see it. “I hope it’s not one of the locals,” he said.

“Maybe it’s Boris. Or Griffin.”

Rob tried to focus on essence, but he’d found it increasingly difficult to do in Everton. Even though he was connected to essence and could see it, he couldn’t see quite as clearly as he used to. It was almost like something blocked his ability to do so.
